The government has been urged to reduce utility tariffs for Bahrainis during the peak summer months when air-conditioning units are on full blast. A legislator has claimed that several citizens have been complaining about a sudden spike in power bills during June, July and August which is posing a huge financial burden on families. MP Mohammed Al Husseini called on the Electricity and Water Authority to find a solution to the ‘annual summer ordeal’ and protect consumers who are already reeling under the global impact of inflation over the last few years. Special tariffs should be adopted during the months of June, July and August and this would come as a huge relief for our people, he said, according to a report in our sister paper Akhbar Al Khaleej. Bahrainis with one home qualify for a subsidised electricity rate of 3 fils per unit, but if they exceed 3,000 units in a month the rate increases to 9 fils per unit for additional electricity consumed. Those exceeding 5,000 units are charged 16 fils for each unit. Mr Al Husseini also urged relevant authorities to monitor meters for technical faults and check bills to ensure the figures are commensurate with subscribers’ consumption.
