A MAN who allegedly burned eight dumpsters in central Manama is standing trial at the High Criminal Court.
The Bahraini driver who lives in A’ali, however, denied charges of arson and endangering lives and property. The incident took place in May.
Three witnesses claimed to have seen the 37-year-old at the scene of the crime.
“I saw a person pulling a dumpster and placing it in the middle of the road and then I saw him leave,” a 42-year-old Pakistani who works for a decoration company said. “Thick smoke was coming out of the garbage.”
Another expatriate claimed he saw the defendant stopping people from putting out the blaze.
“I was going to a cold store when I saw the burning dumpster,” the Bangladeshi labourer said.
“There were a number of people around the trash bin, trying to put the fire out, but I saw that a man (the defendant) was stopping them.”
He added that he saw a fellow Bangladeshi trying to restrain the defendant, who, however, managed to free himself and flee.
A third witness, a Pakistani, was on his way to the mosque when he allegedly saw the suspect at the scene.
The Bahraini defendant is currently in custody, awaiting a judgement to be made in his case.
The trial has been adjourned to Monday for defence arguments.
