The fourth edition of the Asian Amateur Mixed Martial Arts Championship, held within the activities of Brave International Fight Week 2023, which is hosted by Bahrain under the patronage of Supreme Council for Youth and Sports first deputy chairman, General Sports Authority chairman and Bahrain Olympic Committee president Shaikh Khalid bin Hamad Al Khalifa, and organised by the Brave Organisation in co-operation with the Bahrain and Asian Mixed Martial Arts Federations and in partnership with the International Mixed Martial Arts Federation, will kick off today and run until Saturday at Khalifa City Sports Hall.
Bahrain is the first country in the GCC region and West Asia to host this tournament, which will see the participation of 16 national teams, namely: Saudi Arabia, UAE, Kuwait, Iraq, Palestine, Lebanon, Jordan, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan, Iran, Mongolia, India, Tajikistan, Korea, Pakistan and hosts Bahrain.
A total of 244 male and female fighters are participating in the event at the seniors and youth levels with Bahrain represented by 30 players – Tamim Sorour and Hassan Ibrahim (52.2kg – Shabab A), Abdullah Ismail and Al Azzabi Musaed (56.7kg – Shabab A), Mohammed Yousef (61.2kg – Shabab A), Khalid Al Asaad (70.3kg – Shabab A), Mohammed Jahromi (83.9kg – Shabab A), Saud Ibrahim (40kg – Shabab B), Aseel Al Mutaweh (48kg – Shabab B), Abdullah Qahtan (57kg – Shabab B), Yousef Bader & Khalid Fahad (62kg – Shabab B), Abbas Abdullah (67kg – Shabab B), Abdullah Bassem (77.1kg – Shabab B), Sayed Alawi Abdullah (34kg – Shabab C), Hamad Issa (37kg – Shabab C), Abdullah Yousef (40kg – Shabab C), Duaij Ahmed and Ahmed Hussein (44kg – Shabab C), Mohammed Mahmoud and Mahdi Habib (52kg – Shabab C), Ali Marhoon and Jimbat Magmedov (77.1kg – men), Hassan Abdullah (52.2kg – men), Ahmed Mubarak (65.8kg – men), Mohammed Hussain (70.3kg – men), Abdulrahman Mohammed (77.1kg – men), Abdulrahman Janahi and Khalifa Janahi (83.9kg – men) and Ghazi Gaziyev (93kg – men).
The national team has participated in all previous editions of the Asian Championship. The team succeeded in achieving four medals, including a gold medal and 3 bronze medals, in the first edition in Singapore in June 2017. The nationals won 13 medals, including 5 gold, 1 silver and 7 bronze, in the second edition held in Thailand in May 2019, while they won 10 medals, including 8 in the general category and two in the youth category in the third edition held in Tajikistan in October 2022.
