In a significant celebration, King Hamad American Mission Hospital (KHAMH) marked its first anniversary on Friday, reflecting proudly on a year of dedicated service to the community.
Situated in A’Ali, KHAMH stands as the fifth and largest among the American Mission Hospital’s network of facilities, embodying a commitment to providing world-class healthcare in Bahrain.
The inauguration of KHAMH on January 26, 2023, was a landmark occasion attended by His Royal Highness Prince Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa, Crown Prince and Prime Minister. The auspicious day coincided with the completion of 120 years of the hospital’s unwavering commitment to serving the country, as highlighted by the group chief executive Julia Tovey during the celebratory events.
Despite being operational for only a year, KHAMH has already become a medical hub, attracting patients not only from Bahrain but also from across the GCC.
KHAMH’s chief of medical staff and director Dr Deepak Abraham said, “KHAMH’s status as a tertiary care hospital, equipped with expert physicians and cutting-edge medical technology, caters to a diverse range of medical and surgical needs.”
Notably, the facility prioritises eco-friendliness, incorporating partial solar power to reduce its environmental impact. It also includes a 270-seat auditorium, underground parking for 500 cars, and a substantial staff accommodation building within the premises.
The hospital, designed by Leo A Daly, stands as a testament to its commitment to sustainability with about 14,000 square metres of greenery and themed gardens. This holistic approach ensures that KHAMH meets the medical needs of the community in a sustainable and patient-centric manner.
Corporate CEO Dr George Cheriyan took a moment to reflect on the hospital’s illustrious history. “Establishing American Mission Hospital in 1903 as the first hospital in Bahrain and the entire Arabian Gulf region makes us proud. KHAMH has continued this legacy as a not-for-profit institution that has saved countless lives and continues to be a pillar of support for the community.”
Chief operating officer Peter Kennedy said, “KHAMH offers a comprehensive array of medical and surgical services, ensuring the well-being of the community. From accident and emergency to surgery, the hospital covers a spectrum of specialities.”
At the forefront of technology for robotic surgery, home healthcare services and auto-guided vehicles (AGVs) allow seamless logistics within the hospital – a pioneering initiative in the GCC region.
KHAMH is also a key teaching hospital for the Royal College of Surgeons Ireland (RCSI) in Bahrain and has a strategic collaboration with Mayo Clinic in the US, enhancing the hospital’s global outreach and providing access to world-class expertise for patients. As KHAMH enters its second year, the commitment to providing exceptional healthcare remains unwavering.
