THE ban on catching sheri, safi and andaq fish begins today and ends on May 31, announced the Supreme Council for Environment (SCE) yesterday.
“Should a fisherman catch one of these fish by chance during the ban, he should set it free, while taking care to make sure it is not hurt,” read the announcement.
The ban was based on SCE decision (2) of 2024 banning the fishing of sheri, safi and andaq in Bahrain’s territorial waters issued by His Majesty King Hamad’s personal representative and SCE chairman Shaikh Abdulla bin Hamad Al Khalifa.
The decision’s aim is to increase Bahrain’s fish stock by rehabilitating the ecosystem and re-establishing environmental balance, said Shaikh Abdulla.
“Regulating fishing activities is a national responsibility with benefits that affect every member of society,” he stated, stressing the need for people’s co-operation in implementing the decisions.
