The Cabinet has condemned the Israeli attack on a tent camp for displaced people in Rafah, which resulted in the death and injury of innocent civilians.
It reiterated Bahrain’s call for the international community, especially the United Nations Security Council, to assume its responsibilities in enforcing international resolutions and humanitarian law.
This includes demanding an immediate, permanent and comprehensive ceasefire in the Gaza Strip, protecting innocent civilians, and ensuring a safe and continuous flow of humanitarian aid to Gaza residents.
The Cabinet also emphasised the need to create a secure environment to revive a just and comprehensive peace process, allowing the Palestinian people to achieve their legitimate rights to establish an independent state, with East Jerusalem as its capital.
Bahrain’s call comes as the attack that killed 45 people prompted an outcry from global leaders who urged the implementation of a World Court order to halt Israel’s assault.
The US urged Israel to take more care to protect civilians, but stopped short of calling for a halt to the Rafah incursion.
French President Emmanuel Macron said he was “outraged” over Israel’s latest attacks. “These operations must stop. There are no safe areas in Rafah for Palestinian civilians,” he said on X.
German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock and the EU foreign policy chief Josep Borrell said the International Court of Justice ruling must be respected.
“International humanitarian law applies for all, also for Israel’s conduct of the war,” Baerbock said.
UN Special Co-ordinator for the Middle East Peace Process Tor Wennesland said, “I am deeply troubled by the deaths of so many women and children in an area where people have sought shelter. I call upon the Israeli authorities to conduct a thorough and transparent investigation into this incident, hold those responsible for any wrongdoing to account, and take immediate steps to better protect civilians.
Video footage showed a fire raging in the darkness and people screaming in panic. A group of young men tried to haul away sheets of corrugated iron and a hose from a single fire truck began to douse the flames. More than half of the dead were women, children, and elderly people, health officials in Hamas-run Gaza said, adding that the death toll was likely to rise from people with severe burns.
More than 36,000 Palestinians have been killed in Israel’s offensive, Gaza’s health ministry says.
