Over the past four years, Bahrain has invested significantly in smart city projects, with estimates indicating that the country has directed around $2 billion towards various initiatives aimed at enhancing urban infrastructure and integrating advanced technologies into its cities.
These investments have been channelled into projects such as smart grids, smart waste management, and the development of smart buildings and urban planning systems.
As the world rapidly urbanises, the island nation and its Gulf Co-operation Council (GCC) peers are at the forefront of developing smart cities to address the challenges of over-urbanisation.
Connected mobility, a digital ecosystem where vehicles, infrastructure, and smart devices communicate, is crucial for creating efficient and sustainable transportation systems. Vehicles equipped with Internet connectivity and wireless capabilities can share data with both internal and external devices, enabling features like hands-free driving, remote commands, and advanced safety systems.
For families in Bahrain, these features offer significant benefits, especially during the region’s scorching summers. Parents can remotely start their cars to ensure a comfortable temperature before even entering the vehicle.
General Motors’ OnStar has emerged as a leader in connected mobility technology, offering features like Automatic Crash Response, Emergency Services, navigation, and remote diagnostics. Since its launch in Bahrain, OnStar has seen a surge in usage, with 93 per cent of Bahraini users utilising at least one of the top three mobile features.
The increasing adoption of connected vehicle services like OnStar highlights the GCC’s commitment to embracing digital innovation. These services not only offer convenience, protection, and entertainment but also contribute to the region’s transformation into a smarter and more sustainable future.
The UAE Ministry of Economy predicts that the global mobility service market will be worth over $40bn by 2030, emphasising the significant potential of connected mobility. As the GCC accelerates its smart city ambitions, connected vehicles will play a pivotal role in reshaping urban landscapes and driving economic growth.
