Police arrested three men after a German tourist was beaten to the ground and brutally kicked by a gang, the Bangkok Post reports.
The incident happened early on Tuesday morning on Beach Road in Pattaya and the attack was caught on video. The recording went viral on social media.
About 10 men were involved, police said, and they were searching for the other offenders. The video showed some of the men were dressed as motorcycle taxi drivers.
The victim of the assault was identified as David Lelonek, 40, a German national, by Sawang Boriboon Thammasathan Muang Pattaya, a rescue volunteer unit. The attack was reported to the rescue team around 4am.
Lelonek told Pattaya police via an interpreter that he did not know why they attacked him. Police said the victim had declined to press charges but legal action would be taken anyway by the authorities because the incident had ‘damaged the city’s tourist image’, the newspaper reported.
The city is a popular Thai tourist location. Many Bahraini and expat families living in the kingdom have booked Eid holidays in Thailand.
Police said they had arrested three men allegedly involved in the incident, using the information seen in the video. They were identified only as Bandit, 26, Thawatchai, 25, and Pichitchai, 18.
The police investigation was ongoing and others involved would be tracked down, a spokesman added.
