BASKETBALL – EIGHTEEN players have been named to an initial training squad for Bahrain’s senior men’s basketball national team, ahead of their participation in a number of tournaments.
The squad list was announced by the Bahrain Basketball Association (BBA).
The Bahrainis are to be led by top national team mainstays Mustafa Hussain, Muzamil Ameer, Mohammed Ameer, Ahmed Salman, Subah Hussain, and Mohammed Juma’a, along with Ahmed Khalifa, Ali Hussain, Abdulqader Thani, and Ali Jaber.
The kingdom’s naturalised players include Wayne Chism, Elijah Thomas, and new addition Jakarr Sampson, while the roster is rounded out by young call-ups Murtadha Salman, Mohammed Ghazi, Hamad Faisal, Ali Hussain, and Mahmood Abbas.
One of the competitions the Bahrainis are scheduled to participate in is the 44th edition of the William Jones Cup, set to take place in Taiwan from July 12 to 20.
The tournament is organised by the Chinese Taipei Basketball Association. It will be the nationals’ second appearance in the tournament, following their debut in the 1978 edition.
Bahrain’s participation in this year’s event aligns with the BBA’s strategy to elevate the performance of the national team. The initiative seeks to enhance player readiness by engaging with elite-level opponents and gaining exposure to varied tactical approaches.
The tournament brings together national teams, university squads, and club sides from around the world, offering a platform for high-level competition and exposure to diverse playing styles. It serves as a valuable preparatory opportunity for teams ahead of continental and worldwide competitions.
