BASKETBALL – BAHRAIN’S youth basketball national team have been drawn in a tough group for this year’s Arab U16 Basketball Championship.
The tournament is set to be held in Cairo, Egypt, from August 10 to 17, with eight teams from across the region taking part.
The nationals, who are the newly crowned champions of the Fiba U16 Asia Cup Gulf Basketball Association (GBA) Qualifiers 2025, are set to compete in Group A for the competition’s preliminary round alongside Jordan, Algeria, and hosts Egypt, while Group B is composed of Lebanon, Tunisia, Qatar, and Kuwait.
The draw was conducted by officials from organisers – the Arab Basketball Confederation – and the Egyptian Basketball Federation. The official game schedule has yet to be released.
Bahrain’s title-winning campaign in the GBA competition saw them win all four of their games in the tournament, which was hosted by the kingdom.
To go along with their triumph, the Bahrainis punched their tickets – along with Saudi Arabia – to this year’s Fiba U16 Asia Cup, to be held in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia, this September.
Bahrain competed in the GBA event with a squad that included Somto Patrick Onoduenyi, Hassan Oshobuge Abdulkadir, Mohamed Adel Abdulla, Ali Khalil Habib, Hussain Ahmed Madan, Ali Husian Mohamed, Yousif Yaqoob Meshaei, Yousif Ali Alsamaheeji, Ali Alhaddad, Mohamed Mahmood Farhan, Hasan Ruyan, and Hussain Fuad Ghuloom.
It is expected that largely the same roster will be playing in Egypt next month, to be coached by Tunisian tactician Racem Marzougui.
