The GCC Statistical Centre (GCC-Stat) reports that 262.7 million tonnes of waste were collected in the GCC countries by the end of 2023, reflecting a 153.7 per cent increase compared to 2019.
Of this, 192m tonnes were treated, marking a 128.5pc rise.
Household waste per capita dropped to 1.4kg/day. Non-hazardous waste made up 99.2pc of total waste, and 95.8pc of hazardous waste was exported for treatment, according to the UAE news agency, Wam.
The GCC achieved a 30pc recycling rate for hazardous waste, meeting Sustainable Development Goal 12. Medical waste dropped 11.4pc post-Covid, while treatment capacity grew 123.9pc. Agricultural waste rose 44pc, and industrial hazardous waste increased 23.8pc.
According to a Waste Management Market Analysis Study in the GCC countries, published by Mordor Intelligence, the GCC waste management market is expected to reach $97.4 billion by 2030.
