A total of 2,300 criminal reports related to car accidents have been received by the Traffic Prosecution in the first half of the year, including accidents that caused injuries, deaths or loss of property.
Among the most serious violations involved cases of individuals driving against the traffic, according to Traffic Prosecution Attorney General Shaikh Nayef bin Abdulrahman Al Khalifa.
Eight cases with charges of driving against the direction of traffic have been heard in court this year alone, which is a misdemeanour offence in Bahraini law and can result in up to six months in prison or BD500 in fines.
The prosecutor said that exceeding the speed limit by 30 per cent or more can incur between one and six months in prison and a BD500 fine, but can penalties reach 10 years if the recklessness resulted in an injury or death.
Defendants are questioned through video conferencing, according to the Traffic Prosecution, and while the implementation of artificial intelligence (AI) technology in the surveillance of traffic violations is being considered.
