BILLIARDS – Bahrain’s Hussain Maroom defeated Kuo Po Cheng of Chinese Taipei 9-6 last night in the World Pool Championship 2025, currently taking place in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia.
Maroom secured the victory in round one of the losers’ bracket in the first stage of play.
He had earlier suffered a 3-9 defeat to world number 82 Jani Uski of Finland in his opening fixture in this double-elimination competition.
Maroom had a good start in his race-to-nine contest against Cheng, but his opponent roared back to get within 6-8.
The 19-year-old Bahraini was then able to take the following game to seal the hard-earned win.
Maroom is next set to face off against a to-be-determined opponent in the losers’ bracket’s second round, scheduled for tonight.
Maroom is the only Bahraini competing in the prestigious $1 million tournament, which is the flagship event of the World Nineball Tour. He is playing amongst the world’s best for the second successive year.
In the 2024 worlds, also held in Jeddah, he had also claimed a victory in the losers’ bracket first round of stage one.
Meanwhile, elsewhere yesterday, Maroom’s brother Haider Maroom was in action in the Saudi Junior Championship 2025, being held alongside the worlds.
Haider won his round one losers’ bracket match against Laksh Sharma of India 7-1 last night. He had earlier lost 2-7 against Ziad Alqabani of Saudi Arabia in his first match earlier in the day.
Haider continues his campaign today against a to-be-determined opponent in round two of the losers’ bracket today afternoon.
He is part of a full field of 16 of world pool’s brightest young stars who are vying for a share of $20,000 in prize money.
