CYCLING – Bahrain Victorious Development Team rider Jakob Omrzel climbed the podium yesterday in the fourth and penultimate stage of the Giro Ciclistico della Valle d’Aosta 2025 in Italy.
The event is a renowned international under-23 race, featuring the sport’s stars of tomorrow battling it out in five stages.
Omrzel was an impressive runner-up in the 160.6-kiometre leg. The Slovenian finished nine seconds behind winner Jarno Widar of Lotto Development Team. His result helped him climb a massive 40 places to 16th on the general classification (GC) heading into the race’s final stage. He is more than 18 minutes behind Widar, who leads the GC with a three-minute gap from his closest challenger.
Omrzel and Widar are also amongst the top competitors in the King of the Mountains rankings. Omrzel is third with 20 points while Widar is first on 35. Jean-Loup Fayolle of Arkea-B&B Hotels Continentale ranked between them with 28 points.
Today’s concluding leg covers 119.5km in distance. The race featured 457.7km in all.
Omrzel is one of the top riders on the Bahrain Victorious Development Team. Just last month, he took the overall win in the 48th Giro d’Italia Next Gen, also held in Italy – the team’s most significant victory in its history. The event, also known as ‘Baby Giro’, is an amateur road race that is one of the most important and formative events on the under-23 international cycling calendar.
Omrzel then went on to triumph in the elite men’s road race at the Slovenian championship.
