Two suspects have been found guilty, in two separate cases of public indecency, of charges of misusing social media to ‘promote immorality to thousands of followers’.
The Lower Criminal Court yesterday sentenced the two defendants to six months behind bars, fined them BD200 and confiscated the devices used to produce the offending content.
They were said to have ‘incited debauchery and contravened the values and traditions of Bahraini society, as well as public morality’.
One of the suspects, however, was acquitted of the charge of ‘encouraging the practice of prostitution’.
The Public Prosecution stressed that although cyberspace is open for public use, it is governed by strict legal and ethical standards that aim to ensure all content complies with national laws and reflects the values and traditions of society.
