CYCLING – TEAM Bahrain Victorious rider Zak Erzen narrowly missed out on a podium yesterday in the fourth and final stage of the 40th Lidl Deutschland Tour in Germany.
Erzen was classified a strong fifth as part of a group of 11 riders who battled for the win in a sprint to the finish.
Matthew Brennan took the 163.7-kilometre leg in three hours 29 minutes 21 seconds.
Bahrain Victorious’ Edoardo Zambanini was the team’s second-best finisher in 15th, while Nikias Arndt came 41st. Vlad van Mechelen and Alberto Bruttomesso ranked 53rd and 54th, respectively.
With yesterday’s results, Zambanini ended the elite men’s road race as Bahrain Victorious’ leading rider on the general classification (GC) in seventh. He was also fifth overall in the race’s best young rider standings.
Meanwhile, in the 20th Renewi Tour in Belgium, Bahrain Victorious’ Fred Wright also came close to securing a podium when he finished fourth in the event’s GC.
Wright came 24th in yesterday’s fifth and concluding stage, also as part of a large bunch sprint to the finish, which was led by Lotto’s Arnaud de Lie, who triumphed in 3:59:38.
Matej Mohoric was 60th after 184.7km of racing yesterday, while Kamil Gradek was 103rd and Fran Miholjevic 104th.
In the GC, Wright finished 55 seconds behind de Lie to wrap up their participation.
