ASIAN YOUTH GAMES – MORE than 4,300 athletes are officially registered for the third Asian Youth Games, set to take place in the kingdom from October 22 to 31.
The Games’ executive committee has successfully completed the registration process for the participating delegations.
The third Asian Youth Games is to be held under the royal patronage of His Majesty King Hamad.
In a statement yesterday, the Games’ executive committee chairman Yusuf Duaij Muhoorfi announced that approximately 8,400 athletes were initially registered in the preliminary lists, however, the final count of athletes participating stands at over 4,300.
“This figure reflects the hard work of the organising committee, as over 5,000 individuals will participate, including officials, administrators, technical staff, media, and medical teams, representing 45 National Olympic Committees along with the Olympic Council of Asia and various Asian sports federations,” said Muhoorfi.
He expressed his satisfaction with the significant number of participants, highlighting the confidence placed in Bahrain to host the mega multi-sport event to the highest standards. He commended the efforts of all standing committees, including the accreditation committee.
He further noted that National Olympic Committees will receive their accreditation cards during the delegation registration meeting on October 13.
Four main centres for issuing accreditation cards have been established: The Art Hotel and Resort, Exhibition World Bahrain, The Gulf Hotel Bahrain, and Isa Sports City.
This year’s Asian Youth Games features 24 sports, and athletes will also be looking to secure qualification for the Youth Olympic Games 2026 in Dakar, Senegal.
The sports include athletics (track and field and cross country), 3x3 basketball, badminton, volleyball (indoor and beach, road cycling, equestrian (endurance and showjumping), futsal, golf, handball, Muay, jiu-jitsu, judo, kabaddi, mixed martial arts, table tennis, E-sports, taekwondo, wrestling (indoor and beach) boxing, triathlon, weightlifting, teqball, swimming, and camel racing.
The Games’ official opening ceremony will take place on October 22 at Exhibition World Bahrain. The inauguration will be held indoors for the first time, diverging from the traditional outdoor settings of previous editions of the Games, which were held in Singapore in 2009 and China in 2013.
Seven sports will commence prior to the inauguration. These include boys’ futsal, handball, and volleyball, starting on October 19, followed by girls’ futsal, kabaddi, teqball, and beach volleyball, all beginning on October 21.
The final day of the Games on October 31 will only feature men’s and women’s swimming events and their awards presentation, alongside the official closing ceremony.
