CYCLING – TEAM Bahrain Victorious are set to compete in the 10th edition of the CRO Race, which kicks off tomorrow in Croatia’s second-largest city Split, and concludes six stages later in the capital Zagreb.
Over the course of 925 kilometres and 11,000 metres of elevation, riders from 20 teams will face a true test of endurance and versatility.
On paper, four stages favour the sprinters, but the wind could play a decisive role, especially on day two. The route runs along the coast before heading inland, only to cross the bridge onto the island of Pag, where crosswinds are as much a part of the landscape as the scenery itself.
For the general classification (GC), stages four and five are expected to be decisive. The familiar climb of Poklon on Ucka mountain features in stage four, but this year it comes mid-stage, giving the peloton time to reel back the pure climbers who may attack there.
Stage five, with its ascent of Plesivica just 15km from the finish, will offer a final opportunity for those looking to shake up the GC. Bahrain Victorious arrives with a dynamic mix of youth and experience, guided by captain on the road Damiano Caruso.
Sports director Aart Vierhouten commented: “Edoardo Zambanini is expected to lead the team, as the two hardest stages suit his profile. But we’ll also watch Jakob Omrzel closely, he’s coming straight from the world championships, and depending on his condition, he could share the leadership role.
“Max van der Meulen returns from a collarbone injury and looks ready to race.
“For the sprints, Zak Erzen will take the lead. After strong work as a lead-out for Phil Bauhaus, he now has the chance to seize his own opportunities. Supporting him will be Vlad Van Mechelen, who brings sharp form from the Belgian classics and can both support Zak in the sprints and also be something of a wildcard when we need that up our sleeve.”
