VOLLEYBALL – The Philippines posted a thrilling 3-2 (25-21, 19-25, 25-22, 22-25, 15-10) victory over South Korea last night in the girls’ volleyball tournament of the third Asian Youth Games in Bahrain.
The Filipinos went ahead twice in the contest but gave up their set-advantage both times.
They showed their resilience in the fifth and decisive frame, where Samantha Chloey Cantada gave them the lead for good at 7-6.
Cantada’s fellow-outside hitter Rhose Viane Almendralejo then put them up 10-7 following a successful challenge on a touch out, and their opponents never recovered.
The South Koreans could not deal with a spike from opposite Raine Gabrielle Alonzo that earned the Philippines match point, and Cantada delivered the winning block out on the ensuing rally to seal the hard-earned Pool D result.
Elsewhere in the girls’ competition yesterday, Hong Kong outclassed Jordan 3-0 (25-7, 25-7, 25-14) in Pool B, and Iran cruised past Qatar 3-0 (25-6, 25-4, 25-6) in Pool A.
In the boys’ volleyball tournament, China registered a 3-1 (25-17, 20-25, 25-22, 25-16) win against Qatar in Pool B, while Indonesia battled back from a set down to defeat Thailand 3-1 (20-25, 25-20, 25-20, 25-17) in Pool D.
Pakistan completed the day one winners in Pool A, which also features hosts Bahrain.
They outclassed Mongolia 3-0 (25-22, 25-13, 25-15).
Action in both the girls’ and boys’ volleyball competitions continue today at Isa Sports City in Riffa.
All are welcome to attend.
