People in Spain who were wondering about the lack of seating at restaurants may finally have an answer.
Spanish police have arrested seven people who are believed to be part of a gang suspected of stealing more than 1,100 chairs from outdoor seating areas at restaurants in Madrid over the course of two months.
According to police, the group of six men and one woman operated at night to steal chairs from 18 different establishments across Madrid and Talavera de la Reina. Police estimated the total cost of all the thefts to be around 60,000 euros (approximately BD26,300).
In Spain, it is common for restaurants to leave tables and chairs outdoors overnight. The chairs, usually made of metal or plastic, are typically stacked and chained.
Reportedly, the suspects were reselling the stolen chairs in Spain, Morocco, and Romania. They have been charged with theft and belonging to a criminal organisation.
