THIRTY homes in Block 1012 in Hamala could be provided with water connections after MPs yesterday unanimously approved an urgent proposal to expedite procedures.
The motion to fast-track the extension of the public water network to the affected homes was referred to the Cabinet for review.
The proposal stressed that the absence of water services in the block had caused daily hardship for residents, many of whom are families with children and elderly members.
The area, which lies just one kilometre from neighbourhoods with complete infrastructure, has been relying on costly private water delivery services.
“Water is an essential necessity for every household and a cornerstone of decent living,” said Dr Muneer Suroor, who spearheaded the proposal along with four other MPs.
“The residents of the block have endured years without a reliable water supply, even though connecting their homes to the existing network is technically simple and logistically feasible.
“It is unacceptable that in 2025, families in Bahrain are still struggling for something as basic as clean water.”
He added that many families in the area were young Bahraini households burdened by bank loans and rising living costs, making it difficult for them to continue relying on private water companies.
“These families are doing everything they can to build a stable life. They should not be penalised for simply wanting access to a basic public service,” said Dr Suroor.
The proposal also noted that lack of access to water could increase health risks and undermine the quality of life in the community.
During the debate on the proposal, proceedings were briefly paused when Parliament’s second deputy speaker Ahmed Qarata requested that the motion be postponed, since a similar proposal was already under review by the general secretariat.
However, Speaker Ahmed Al Musallam ruled that the vote could proceed, noting that both topics originated from the same MP.
