BASKETBALL – MUHARRAQ made a rousing start to their title-defence last night in the 2025-26 Zain Bahrain Basketball League, routing Nuwaidrat 107-79 at Zain Basketball Arena in Um Al Hassam.
Muharraq were in control for virtually the entire contest and they led by as many as 29 points late on.
After leading 53-45 at the interval, they poured in 31 points in the third quarter while holding their opponents to 20 to take a commanding 84-65 advantage into the final frame. There, they continued their strong play and closed things out for the big opening win.
Three players finished with 20 or more points for Muharraq yesterday. Mohammed Juma’a led the way with 21 while also taking down 11 rebounds, while Mahmood Abbas Isa and Kerwin Roach chipped in with 20 apiece. Isa was red hot from beyond the arc, firing in an impressive six three-pointers.
Wayne Chism had a double-double with 11 points and 10 boards for Muharraq, while Nader Ali also finished with 11 points, which included three triples.
Quinton Rashad scored 32 to spearhead Nuwaidrat in the losing effort.
In last night’s other game, Samaheej defeated Sitra 79-68.
Samaheej went ahead by as many as 21 points in the second half en route to securing the result.
Joe-Junior Mvuezolo poured in a game-high 36 points while Salman Alkaibi contributed 19 markers and 13 rebounds along with five steals for Samaheej.
Ali Mohsen was Sitra’s top performer with 28 points, while Mahdi Abdulameer added 19 off the bench.
Last night’s games wrapped up the first gameweek of the new season. Week two is scheduled to get underway on November 27.
