A protester climbed on to the balcony of the Iranian embassy in London and tore down the regime’s flag, the UK’s Telegraph reports.
Images shared on social media showed the protester scaling the front of the building opposite Hyde Park before climbing on to a balcony and raising the ‘Lion and Sun’ flag of Imperial Iran, which the regime has long banned.
The move was in support of the thousands of Iranians who have taken part in protests against the regime in recent weeks.
The man was cheered by hundreds of opposition supporters who had gathered in front of the embassy, which was the site of the a six-day siege in 1980, when an SAS unit stormed the building to rescue 26 hostages taken by six armed men.
The flag raised by the protester, which has been adopted by Iran’s democratic opposition, features horizontal stripes of green, white and red, with a depiction of a sword-wielding lion in front of a sun in the centre.
It was removed shortly after by an official from the embassy, who climbed on to the balcony from inside the building, to jeers from the crowd.
