A proposal to acquire Al Malaki Specialist Hospital in East Riffa and convert it into a government maternity hospital is on MPs’ table on Tuesday.
The proposal, submitted by five MPs led by Bader Al Tamimi, aims to strengthen public healthcare services for women and children and address what legislators describe as ‘a long-standing service gap’ in the Southern Governorate.
It has been backed by Parliament’s services committee, which said the move would help ensure fairer distribution of health services, ease pressure on existing government hospitals and improve access to maternity and neonatal care for residents of Riffa and surrounding areas.
“The Southern Governorate has witnessed significant population growth, yet maternity and specialised women’s healthcare services remain limited,” Mr Al Tamimi said.
“Converting an existing, fully equipped hospital into a government maternity facility is a practical and efficient solution that serves mothers, children and newborns.
“Our goal is to bring essential services closer to citizens, reduce overcrowding at other government hospitals and ensure that women receive timely and dignified healthcare without long travel or delays.”
