Bahrain has stressed the importance of Iran’s full compliance with relevant United Nations Security Council resolutions and the need to halt hostile conduct that threatens the security and stability of the region.
The statement was made during the address delivered by Bahrain’s Permanent Representative to the UN Jamal Fares Al Rowaiei, concerning the sanctions regime on Iran for its failure to suspend its uranium enrichment programme.
The sanctions regime imposes restrictions on the supply of nuclear-related technologies and materials and freezes the assets of key companies and individuals associated with the enrichment programme.
Ambassador Al Rowaiei noted that the region has witnessed in recent days a series of missile attacks and drone strikes carried out by Iran targeting several countries in the region, including Bahrain.
It’s a clear violation of the principles of international law and the Charter of the United Nations, and a direct threat to regional and international peace and security, he said.
He emphasised that the sanctions committee established pursuant to Security Council Resolution 1737 was created to ensure Iran’s compliance with its relevant international obligations.
However, developments on the ground indicate that the continuation of certain aggressive actions by Iran now constitutes a direct threat to the security and stability of the region and the safety of its peoples.
