CYCLING – TEAM Bahrain Victorious rider Matevz Govekar put in a strong challenge for a top 10 place yesterday in the second stage of the 105th Volta Ciclista a Catalunya in Spain.
Govekar finished the 167.4-kilometre leg in 13th place as part of a bunch sprint to the finish, led by stage winner Magnus Cort of Uno-X Mobility. Cort’s winning time was three hours 45 minutes 28 seconds, which he shared with many others in the lead group.
Noa Isidore of Decathlon CMA CGM Team was the runner-up and Francesco Busatto of Alpecin-Premier Tech came third.
Amongst Govekar’s Bahrain Victorious teammates, Lenny Martinez ranked 23rd yesterday, Jakob Omrzel was 32nd, Santiago Buitrago came 77th, Afonso Eulalio was 91st, Rainer Kepplinger finished 135th, and Nikias Arndt was 145th.
Following yesterday’s results, Martinez dropped two places to eighth on the general classification as the team’s leading rider. He also dropped one spot to third on the best young rider rankings, where he shares a similar time with leader Andrea Raccagni Noviero of Soudal Quick-Step.
Meanwhile, Bahrain Victorious climbed two positions to eighth in the teams’ ranking, currently led by Soudal Quick-Step. The seven-stage race continues today with the third leg, covering 159.4km.
