CYCLING – TEAM Bahrain Victorious rider Jakob Omrzel continued his fine showing in the 49th Tour of the Alps yesterday by taking eighth overall in the race’s fourth and penultimate stage.
The Slovenian was part of a trailing group that finished 20 seconds behind winner Lennart Jasch of Tudor Pro Cycling Team, who secured first place in a total time of four hours 28 minutes and six seconds after 167.8 kilometres of racing.
Omrzel claimed his place amongst the top 10 for the second straight leg, and it strengthened his hold on seventh position in the general classification heading into today’s final stage.
Omrzel is 29 seconds behind leader Giulio Pellizzari of Red Bull-Bora-hansgrohe on the overall standings, while he remained in position to secure a podium for third in the best young rider rankings, also led by Pellizzari.
Amongst Bahrain Victorious’ other competitors yesterday, Kasper Borremans from Finland finished in 41st place, while Rainer Kepplinger from Austria was 45th. Roman Erkamov from Slovenia ranked 55th in the leg, and Briton Oliver Stockwell was 60th. Dutchman Max van der Meulen came 86th for the squad while Hungarian Balint Feldhoffer did not finish.
Today’s fifth and final stage will cover 128.6km, starting from the Italian city of Trento and ending in the city of Bolzano.
