HANDBALL – BAHRAIN’S Al Najma will be hoping to finally break into the wins column tonight when they take on Sharjah Sports Club from the UAE in the 28th Asian Men’s Club League Handball Championship, currently being played in Sabah Al Salem, Kuwait.
The fixture is scheduled for an 8pm throw-off, Bahrain time, and it will be played at Sheikh Saad Al Abdullah Al Salim Al Sabah Covered Halls Complex.
It will be their third assignment in the preliminary round of the seven-team tournament, and they will be looking to bounce back from two opening defeats against hosts Kuwait SC and Al Duhail from Qatar.
This evening’s clash is one of four games remaining in the preliminaries for the kingdom’s representatives. Najma are currently sixth on the seven-team table, and they will need to start winning should they hope to advance to the semi-finals.
Following today’s assignment, Najma, coached by Abdulrahman Mohamed, face Al Arabi of Qatar tomorrow at 4pm before playing their penultimate fixture against Burgan SC of Kuwait on Friday, also at 4pm. Najma then complete this stage against Khaleej Club from Saudi Arabia on Sunday at 8pm. All times are Bahrain.
After this single round-robin, the top four teams on the standings move on to the last four, scheduled for Monday. The gold and bronze medal games will then be held next Wednesday.
This year’s Asian Men’s Club League Handball Championship also acts as a qualifier for the 19th IHF Men’s Handball Club World Championship, with the champions securing direct qualification for the International Handball Federation (IHF) competition, to be held in Egypt in October later this year
