HANDBALL – Bahran handball superstar and former Olympian Mohammed Mirza announced yesterday his official retirement from competitive handball.
“End of a chapter, not the passion,” Mirza said on his official social media account. “Goodbye, court!”
Mirza was a key member of the kingdom’s senior men’s handball national team for many years, as well as a top player with his Bahraini clubs Al Ahli and Al Najma, with whom he won multiple titles at the national, regional, and continental levels.
Mirza, who played as a pivot, was part of Bahrain’s squad that made history with their participation in the men’s handball tournament at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics.
“For many years, he dedicated himself to the beautiful game, never merely as a player wearing a jersey, but as a symbol of sacrifice, determination, and loyalty while representing his country,” the Bahrain Handball Federation (BHF) said in a tribute posted on their official social media account.
“Mohammed Mirza embodied true leadership and passion on the field, leaving an indelible mark on the hearts of his teammates, fans, and admirers, and boasting achievements etched in gold in the annals of Bahraini sports.”
The BHF listed Mirza’s major accomplishments with the national team.
Aside from the Tokyo Olympics, these are headlined by his flying the kingdom’s flag in six editions of the men’s handball world championships, including in 2011 in Sweden, in 2017 in France, in 2019 in Germany and Denmark, in 2021 in Egypt, in 2023 in Sweden and Poland, and in 2025 in Croatia.
“Thank you for every moment of joy you created, and for every drop of sweat you gave for the nation,” the BHF post concluded.
“Farewell to the court as a player, and welcome as an immortal legend in the game’s history.
“Thank you, Abu Iyad!”
