Reinforcing its role as a trusted strategic partner to the Kingdom of Bahrain's industrial sector, the Bahrain centre for Strategic, International and Energy Studies (Derasat) has completed a comprehensive strategic study titled "Alba’s Energy Transition and Decarbonisation Pathways," for Aluminium Bahrain B.S.C. (Alba), the world’s largest aluminium smelter on a single site.
The study establishes an integrated strategic framework to support Alba’s long-term energy transformation, assessing potential pathways through 2050. Using advanced modelling and scenario-based analysis, it evaluates the implications of evolving energy sources, contractual structures, and emerging technologies for operational costs, carbon footprint, and energy security amid shifting global liquefied natural gas (LNG) markets and evolving domestic fuel dynamics.

Dr. Abdulla Isa Alabbasi, Director of the Energy and Environment Studies programme at Derasat, who supervised the study and led the research team, said, "The study applies an advanced modelling framework to assess future scenarios through 2050 and examine the implications of alternative energy sources, contracting mechanisms, and technology options for costs, emissions, and supply security, while accounting for LNG price volatility. This approach provides a robust analytical foundation for long-term strategic decision-making and supports an effective balance between economic efficiency, sustainability, and energy security."
