Russian medical teams have successfully performed what was described as the world’s first skull base surgery on a 101-year-old patient at a hospital affiliated with Samara State Medical University.
Doctors said that the procedure was performed after the patient developed sphenoid sinusitis. He remained under medical observation at the hospital for a week before being discharged after his condition improved.
The decision to perform the surgery was prompted by the seriousness of the patient’s condition; the hospital routinely carries out such procedures, but this was the first time one had been performed on a patient of this age.
The case highlights the potential for reassessing age-related restrictions on certain surgical procedures, particularly as modern medical technologies become more advanced and clear clinical indications support the prospects of successful outcomes.
