KHK MMA fighter Hussain Ayyad yesterday qualified for the semi-final of the European Open Championships of Amateur MMA defeating David Fogarty of Ireland, holder of the silver medal in the last edition.
The championship is being organised in the Bulgarian capital Sofia by International Mixed Martial Arts Federation and concludes tomorrow.
Ayyad excelled in all three rounds of his 56kg category bout and won by a decision from the Judging Panel.
Ayyad is expected to face Bulgarian fighter Nikolay Ivaylov in today’s semi-finals. The last four bout is tipped to be a thriller given the strong combat abilities of both the fighters.
However, Ayyad is considered a favourite as he had reached the same stage in the Birmingham Championship in 2015.
First deputy president of Supreme Council for Youth and Sports, honourary president of Bahrain Mixed Martial Arts Federation and founder of Khalid bin Hamad Al Khalifa Mixed Martial Organisation (KHK MMA) congratulated Ayyad on his latest achievement.
Performance
Shaikh Khalid praised his performance and wished him luck for his bout against Ivaylov.
Ayyad is assured of the bronze medal based on the rules of this championship.
“I thank God for this result and the support and encouragement of Shaikh Khalid,” said Ayyad.
Bahrain Mixed Martial Arts Federation (BMMAF) secretary general Waleed Sayar expressed his joy over the result.
Meanwhile, food specialist Mohamed Saad has joined the Bahrain delegation in Sofia. It is the first time that a food specialist is part of the national team and he will be supervising the nutrition of the team members.
