SAUDI Arabia and Cambodia yesterday scored fine victories over Singapore and Oman respectively to earn promotion to the Davis Cup Asia-Oceania Zone Group Three for next year.
Singapore’s Roy Hobbs defeated Saudi Arabia’s Fahad Al Saad 6-0, 6-2 in the first singles and looked set to seal the match when Shaheed Alam won the first set against Ammar Al Haqbani 6-4.
But Al Haqbani fought back to win the next two sets 6-4 and 6-3 to level the match.
Saudi’s Al Saad and Al Haqbani defeated Hobbs and Hao Yuan NG 6-3, 6-3 in the doubles clash to clinch victory and promotion to Group Three.
Cambodia, on the other, had an easy time defeating Oman 2-0.
Oman’s Mohammed Al Nabhani went down fighting to Cambodia’s Samneang Long 6-3, 2-6, 3-6. Kenny Bun beat Abdullah Al Barwani 6-2, 6-1 to make it 2-0.
Meanwhile, Bahrain lost to Tajikistan 1-2 in the seventh place playoff match.
Hasan Abdulnabi gave Bahrain the lead in the first singles defeating Sergey Makashin 6-4, 6-3.
Fighting
But Bahrain’s Yusuf Qaed fell went down fighting to Mirkhusein Yakhyaev 7-6(4), 6-1.
Hasan and his brother Abdulkarim Abdulnabi lost the doubles match to Makashin and Yakhyaev 6-3, 5-7, 3-6.
Myanmar finished fifth defeating Mongolia 2-1.
Kyrgyzstan defeat Bangladesh 2-1 in the match for ninth and 10th place.
