The top four winners on the podium
Jakub Jurka of Czech Republic won the men’s singles title of the World Cup Epee Junior Championship which kicked off yesterday at Khalifa Sports City Hall in Isa Town.
Jurka defeated Owen Jordan of Britain in the final to claim the gold medal. Matthew Cooper of Britain and Giulio Gaitani of Italy shared third place and bronze medals.
The two-day event, which ends today, is being held under the patronage of the Representative of His Majesty the King for Charity Works and Youth Affairs, Chairman of the Supreme Council for Youth and Sports, and President of Bahrain Olympic Committee (BOC),
Shaikh Nasser bin Hamad Al Khalifa, and sponsored by Minji Construction and Investment Company and Bapco.
BOC general secretary Abdulrahman Askar, Bahrain Fencing Association president Shaikh Ibrahim bin Salman Al Khalifa, BOC member Shaikha Hayat bint Abdulaziz Al Khalifa and Fencing Confederation of Asia head Celso Dayrit presented the prizes to the winners.
Shaikh Nasser wished the participating teams all the best in the tournament.
He said hosting this world-class event in Bahrain proves the country’s position on the sports map, adding that it will help Bahrain’s sport movement improve at high level.
Shaikh Ibrahim welcomed Shaikh Nasser and thanked him for patronising the event for the second consecutive year.
Earlier, Shaikh Ibrahim checked out the latest preparations and the venue before the official start of the event. He praised the efforts made by all committees to make it successful.
Meanwhile, action in the women’s category will begin at 10am and the finals at 5pm, followed by the prize presentation.
