BAHRAIN women’s national football team went down fighting against the British Army women’s team 1-2 last night in a friendly match played at the Bahrain Football Association (BFA) pitches in Riffa.
The Bahrainis conceded the decisive goal late in the contest after battling back from a first-half deficit.
Striker Libby Dixon supplied the winner for the visitors just minutes from the final whistle. Right back Krissty Wright had earlier opened the scoring from the penalty spot in the opening 45 minutes, but then Bahrain team captain Yasmine Al Fayez equalised for the home side after the interval.
Last night’s fixture was a part of the British Army’s tour of the Gulf. Bahrain was their third stop, having already visited Kuwait and Qatar and having won their friendly games there as well.
Wright expressed her delight with the friendly, which she says was the toughest they had played yet.
“It was an exceptional match,” Wright told the GDN. “The game was very physical and the Bahrain team were very strong, very quick and they really made us work hard for the win.
“We are happy to have taken this game, especially since it was the toughest challenge we have faced yet.”
Following their visit to Bahrain, the British Army’s women’s team are also scheduled to make visits to the UAE and Oman, where they will also be playing friendly games against their local counterparts.
The Bahrainis were coached by Khaled Al Harban while the visitors had Mags Macateer as their head coach and Emma Askins as their team captain.
BFA president Shaikh Ali bin Khalifa Al Khalifa attended the match, along with other high-ranking officials from the BFA and the British community.
Following last night’s action, trophies and medals were awarded to the players.
