An unemployed, 29-year-old man was sentenced to seven years in prison after a policeman who was chasing him tripped and fractured his pelvis.
The High Criminal Court found the Bahraini man guilty of assaulting an on-duty officer and unintentionally leaving him with a disability.
According to the 40-year-old policeman, who was on patrol in Sitra on the day of the incident, he noticed a group of people tracking and taking photos of patrols vehicles in the area.
He and his partner approached them with the vehicle to ask for their identities, but they ran away, he recounted.
The policemen followed the group, among whom was the defendant, to arrest them, but the suspect reportedly resisted arrest by hitting the officer in his stomach in an effort to ward him off.
“As I was trying to arrest the defendant, I tripped and started crawling on the ground,” testified the officer.
“My leg hit an elevated sewer drain, and I felt severe pain.”
As he was writhing in pain, his partner arrested the defendant.
The victim’s medical report detailed the injury, and stated that the fall caused a break in left side of his pelvis, which was evaluated as a five per cent disability. The fracture was accompanied by a dislocation.
The medical report stated that the victim’s account of the incident was consistent with his injuries.
After the injury, the 40-year-old officer was taken to the Police Fort Clinic, then was moved to the Bahrain Defence Force Hospital, where the complex fracture was discovered.
He underwent surgery to stabilise his pelvis, which involved the use of metal plates and screws.
