The King Fahd Stadium (Al-Durra) opened its doors for families to attend the clash between Al-Hilal and Al-Ittihad as part of the 17th round of the Saudi professional football league.
Families donned the scarves bearing the colours of their favourite teams as they headed to the stadium to attend the match, which ended in a draw 1-1.
Families had a marked presence last Friday when they attended match opposing Al-Al-Ahli and Al-Batan at King Abdulla Stadium (Al-Jawhara).
Social media users saluted the new step launching hashtag: “people welcome women’s entry to the stadiums”.
The Federations Internationale de Football Association (FIFA) has also commended the Saudi decision allowing women to enter stadiums and attend soccer matches. The international governing body described the unprecedented step as a sporting victory for women.
The FIFA statement wished women more successes and strides, stressing the importance of their presence to cheer their national team in the World Cup in Russia 2018.
