Abraham Cheroben on way to winning the 10,000m silver
BAHRAIN had a satisfying day yesterday at the 18th Asian Games in Jakarta and Palembang.
In jiu-jitsu, Bahrain’s Nijad Algosaibi won his opening match of the day against Abdul Rehman of Pakistan 100-0 to march on to the quarter-finals in the Newaza men’s under-77kg category.
Algosaibi, however, could not advance further as he bowed to Erkhbayar Batkhuyag of Mongoloia 0-100 in the next round.
Ruslan Israilov of Kazakhstan claimed the gold beating Nursultan Alymkulov of Kyrgyzstan in the final. Abdelkarim Alrashid and Mohamed Alqubaisi, both of the UAE, shared the bronze.

Yesterday was the final day of jiu-jitsu at the Asian Games.
Meanwhile, Bahraini shooters Hasan Mohammed and Maryam Hassani failed to qualify for the finals in their respective skeet competitions.
On the second day of qualifying in the men’s event, Mohammed finished 17th with a total of 118 points. Only the top six qualified for the medal round and Mansour Alrashidi of Kuwait won the gold.
In the women’s event, Maryam finished 16th with 105 points. Sutiya Jiewchaloemmit of Thailand won the gold.
Like jiu-jitsu, the shooting events came to an end yesterday.
In sailing, Bahrain’s Abdulla Janahi maintained his position in the middle of the Laser Standard fleet after staying in eighth place overall following races six and seven yesterday.
Janahi has 46 net points after finishing fifth and eighth in the two races yesterday, with his appearance in the top five being his best so far.
Five races remain in the Laser Standard. Today is a rest day and action resumes tomorrow.
Today Bahrain will be competing in handball and equestrian apart from athletics.
Bahrain handball team will be taking on Japan in one of two semi-final clashes, starting 2pm Bahrain time.
Defending champions Qatar and reigning silver-medallists South Korea clash in the other semi-final.
Bahrain have won all six of their matches so far. Coached by Aron Kristjansson from Iceland, Bahrain are hoping to improve on their bronze medal performance in the previous Asian Games in 2014 in Incheon, South Korea.
In equestrian, Bahrain’s Shaikh Hasan bin Rashid Al Khalifa, astride AW Vivika, is set to lead Bahrain in the first qualification round of the jumping individual event.
The other Bahraini riders are Ahmed Maki on Consuela van Verst, Sayed Adnan Alalawai on Baluu and Khaled Alkhatri on Sierra. There are 68 riders competing in the event.
