A BAHRAINI newspaper official sentenced to a month of community service in connection with a defamation case has appealed against his conviction.
Al Watan newspaper editor-in-chief Yusuf Al Binkhalil was found guilty of defaming incumbent MP Anas Buhindi by publishing an article about him being dismissed as a mosque imam.
Mr Al Binkhalil was sentenced by the High Criminal Court on October 19. He lodged an appeal at the Supreme Criminal Appeals Court which adjourned the case until November 12 for him to attend.
The article quoted residents apparently thanking Justice, Islamic Affairs and Endowments Minister Shaikh Khalid bin Ali Al Khalifa for dismissing Mr Buhindi, who was also parliament’s woman and child committee chairman.
The article appeared after a complaint was lodged against Mr Buhindi over leaked Instagram conversations, which allegedly showed him conspiring with government and parliament officials as well as MPs to remove parliament chairman Ahmed Al Mulla from his post.
However, he avoided prosecution because the majority of MPs refused to lift his immunity.
