Thousands of motorists gave up their cars to commute by public transport in Dubai on Sunday, according to Emarat Alyoum.
The initiative was spearheaded by Dubai Municipality to mark the UAE Car Free Day.
More than 20,000 people and enterprises took part in the initiative, up from 5,270 last year.
The Ministry of Climate Change and Environment, Dubai Police, Dubai Ambulance Service, private companies, UAE Red crescent, Ajman Municipality and other public and private enterprises took part.
The awareness campaign aims at protecting the environment and reducing carbon dioxide gas emission.
According to official authorities, the UAE Car Free Day contributed to reducing carbon gas emission by 117 tons last year in Dubai.
Dubai Police displayed two electric cars as part of efforts to promote environment-friendly vehicles using renewable energy.
