Doha: State-backed company Mowasalat, that runs Karwa buses and taxis in Qatar, announced that it would reserve front seats in buses for women passengers.
The decision has been implemented in all large buses used for public transport, Arabic daily Al Sharq reported.
The move is aimed at increasing women passengers in buses as very few women and families use public buses in the country.
The public transport facility is being used largely by expatriate single workers.
Mowasalat is also planning a campaign to increase public awareness of the new service.
Apart from newspaper announcements, stickers and posters will also be displayed on public buses to inform commuters about the new service.
Separate stickers will be pasted inside buses to help passengers identify the seats reserved for women.
The ministry is also planning to introduce a unified ticketing system for all modes of public transport in the country, reported Arabic daily Al Sharq.
Currently 200 Mowasalat 200 buses ply in the country with roughly 30,000 commuters using them daily, according to data released by the company a few months ago.
