ALMOST 100 women flew the flag for female empowerment during an early morning bike ride through Seef yesterday.
It was part of a countdown to the Women Power Summit (WPS), which is taking place in Bahrain next month.
Around 90 participants from Bahrain and Saudi Arabia took part in yesterday’s awareness event, organised in co-operation with female bike club Cycling Bees.
“We have 90 girls from across Bahrain, and Saudi Arabia too, that have all gathered here to make a point,” said Cycling Bees co-founder and co-captain Sarah Al Sammak.
“Bahrain is an open country and women can cycle anywhere they want around the villages and towns. We want to reach that understanding.
“The message we want to send is never be afraid of anything and do whatever you feel like.”
Fellow co-founder and co-captain, Dana Zubari, said there were multiple benefits of yesterday’s event.
“This event is helping us network in the lead up to the summit, while encouraging health and wellness through cycling,” she explained.
“Generally the government, the Bahrain Cycling Association and any other sports or youth federation encourages Bahraini women to participate in group events and activities in their strong belief of women empowerment.”
The bike ride saw participants ride from the The Westin City Centre Bahrain to Bahrain Fort and back, taking in areas of Seef on the way.
A run is also lined up next Saturday morning in Adliya to draw attention to the Women Power Summit (WPS), which is taking place on October 13 and 14 at the Sofitel Bahrain Zallaq Thalassa Sea & Spa.
During the summit speakers will tackle subjects including leadership, entrepreneurship and innovation.
Two tickets to the Maldives are also up for grabs in a Power Pitch Competition during the summit, targeting female founders of tech-enabled start-ups from the MENA region.
Winners will also get one-to-one mentorship opportunities with industry professionals, marketing collateral development and access to co-working space.
