Dubai: A Pakistani woman claimed that Lipton's Lemon Green Tea was full of live worms.
She uploaded a video on Facebook pouring content of tea bag and picking out the ‘worms’ from among the leaves.
The video went viral with over 6.2 million views.
Ismat Raza said she had found worms in 'each and every one' of Lipton's lemon-flavoured green tea bags.
Lipton responded on Tuesday with a video showing the 'lemon pieces' dissolving in hot water.
“In response to the video of Lipton's Lemon Green Tea bags, there are no ‘worms’ in our tea bags. These are small lemon flavour pieces which have been mistaken for worms. If you put these lemon flavour pieces in hot water they will dissolve. The tea is of the highest quality standard and is absolutely safe to consume,” Lipton Company said in a statement.
The news about possible contamination in Lipton's green tea bag prompted Dubai Municipality to visit Lipton's Jebel Ali factory, which supplies tea to the MENA region.
“We have visited the brand's Dubai factory and checked every product. The moving images are only strands of lemon flavour,” Emirates 24/7 quoted Safwan Saifuddin Al Tikarli. He is Food Planning & Studies Specialist at Dubai Municipality.
Dubai Municipality said the tea is safe to drink.
“The Food Safety Management at Dubai Municipality would like to advise everyone not to circulate such videos but verify the information from official, scientific and legal authorities,” the municipality said.
