AN alleged rioter placed a hoax bomb near his home before falling from a rooftop of his home in an attempt to evade arrest, a court heard.
The 20-year-old, who survived the plunge off the two-storey building and suffered several injuries to his legs, appeared at the High Criminal Court yesterday to deny arson and placing a hoax bomb in a street.
He said he panicked when he saw policemen and ran to the roof his home in East Eker before stumbling over a water tank and falling, in the incident in January 2018.
“I did not place a hoax bomb near my house,” he told judges.
“I saw policemen running in a street near my home and I was scared. I started running and they chased me.
“I went to the second floor of my house and stumbled on a water tank on the rooftop before falling and injuring my legs in the process.”
However, forensics at the crime scene traced the defendant after finding his DNA on the hoax bomb, which was made of an electrical circuit, batteries and a watch.
A detective described how secret sources led him to the defendant.
“Policemen cornered the area where the device was placed in East Eker before finding that it was a hoax bomb,” the 40-year-old Bahraini told prosecutors.
“I used my secret sources and they led me to the defendant.
“In addition, his DNA was lifted of the hoax bomb.
“The defendant then tried to evade arrest but fell from the rooftop of his house.”
The trial has been adjourned until Sunday for review.
