A NUMBER of people have been arrested for begging in Muharraq.
Muharraq Governorate Police Directorate said legal measures have been initiated and the individuals referred to the Public Prosecution.
Muharraq Municipal Council member Ahmed Al Meghawi, who co-ordinated with the police to catch the beggars red-handed, said raids will continue as one of those arrested tested positive for Covid-19.
“Begging is a crime and now with Covid-19 spreading rapidly, it has become more dangerous,” said Mr Al Meghawi.
“One beggar tested positive for Covid-19 and so the public should be made aware that others could also be carriers of the virus,” he said.
The directorate indicated that it is the social responsibility of citizens and residents to counter these “negative practices that are in violation of the law”.
Residents have been urged to report any incident by contacting the directorate or by calling 17337000.
