Bahrain: A Woman has been arrested in Thailand on human-trafficking charges for luring a Thai woman into prostitution in Bahrain, officials said yesterday.
The 29-year-old woman, of Lomsak district of Phetchabun province, was arrested at Victory Monument in Bangkok under a warrant issued by the criminal court, said anti-trafficking in people division commander Police Major General Kornchai
Khlaikhlueng.
The arrest followed a complaint filed by a 23-year-old woman with a non-governmental group assisting victims of crime, the Bangkok Post
reported.
The woman, whose name has been withheld, said in April she found an announcement on Facebook inviting Thai women to apply to work as waitress at Thai restaurants in Bahrain with a salary of 300,000 baht (BD3,207) per month.
An applicant was required to pay 160,000 baht (BD1,710) in brokerage fees. She contacted the accused, who told her to contact another Thai woman identified only as Leela.
On April 6, the victim travelled to Bahrain where two Thai women and three Bahraini men seized her passport and took her to a restaurant for prostitution, but she refused to comply with them.
Ms Leela told the victim to pay 50,000 baht (BD534) in exchange for her release. The victim was subsequently forced to work as a prostitute for four nights. After that she returned to Thailand on April 13. She then filed a complaint. With information from the group, anti-human trafficking police investigated and obtained a court warrant to arrest the accused.
