Five people, four Asians and an Arab, have been sentenced by the Dubai Criminal Court to one year imprisonment, and subsequent deportation from the country, for stealing a Range Rover, a luxury vehicle worth AED 685,000.
They rented it for two days and forged the documentation in order to transport it to another Gulf country.
An investigation record states that an employee in a luxury car rental office realised that the delivery of a 2020 model Range Rover vehicle had been delayed by two days, and had incurred a fine of AED 3000. Upon contacting the vehicle tracking service, it was reported that one of the tracking devices had been removed from the vehicle. A second tracking device, however, revealed that the vehicle was in another emirate.
The truck was transporting the vehicle to a neighbouring country. The truck driver stated that a person from the Gulf had called him from outside the state, asking him to move the car for a price of AED 2500, and sending him the location of the vehicle, its keys, and its documentation.
According to authorities, the fugitive rented the vehicle, fled the country, and corresponded with the other criminals in order to falsify the vehicle's travel documents from the Roads and Transport Authority. This was done so that, the vehicle could be shipped to the escaping fugitive after the tracking device was removed from the inside.
