THE top rival in the foldable phone market has officially arrived with a lethal combination of fashion, beauty and technology.
Huawei has launched not one but two flagship smartphones that capture the eyes and the heart: P50 Pro and P50 Pocket.
The P50 Pocket has not only been described as one of the most popular phones to be launched this year, it packs a solid punch by entering the foldable phone segment with a bang.
There is nothing out there that matches the design. The back of the device captures the shadows and texture of the earth, which are brought to life through an advanced 3D micro-sculpture design on the white version of the device.
Huawei joined forces with prominent haute couture designer, Iris Van Herpen, in a cross-industry collaboration to create the Pocket Premium edition.
Once unfolded, the device looks like your regular phone screen, but it is packed with super features and backed by the Snapdragon 888 4G chipset; yes, it doesn’t support 5G, but that doesn’t limit the smartphone in anyway.
This is the first clamshell foldable phone by Huawei post its three generations in the Mate X foldable series.
The 6.9-inch display is powered by a 4,000mAh battery that lasted for two days during its test run.
However, it addresses the million-dollar question when it comes to foldable smartphones related to the crease in the middle of the screen courtesy the multi-dimensional hinge that ensures there is no gap.
Its fits well in your hands and pockets with a good overall feel to it.
It did not distract my view as I watched award-winning movies on the P50 Pocket.
Jumping straight into the specs, it fully supports the cutting-edge technology that debuted with P50 Pro including the True-Chroma Image Engine and Huawei XD Optics that deliver imagery with extreme clarity as skin tones look pretty smooth and colours are punchy.
The powerful camera hardware features a 40MP main cam alongside a 13MP Ultra-Wide Angle camera and a 32MP Ultra Spectrum Camera, the latter combining powerful hardware and software, as well as the tweaking of more than 2,000 colours across the full P3 colour gamut, to capture what the human eye sees.
Using the Ultra Spectrum Fluorescence Photography feature, the phone can also capture content and details that are unseen by the human eye.
It also introduces Sunscreen detection for the first time.
Accessible via the Mirror app, this handy feature visualises the spread of sunscreen on skin to help check for uncovered spots and avoid getting sunburnt.
One key takeaway is the exterior circular display that ensures you do not miss those selfies or check notifications without flipping open the device. The main features is the selfie with rear camera: it uses selfie algorithms and the big camera sensor to boost low light performance, allowing to take superior, more atmospheric selfies.
The exterior screen further supports the display of notifications, schedule, calendar, music, weather, and control of other features.
The P50 Pocket device is available in 8GB RAM + 256GB ROM, while the HUAWEI P50 Pocket Premium Edition built-in memory is 12GB RAM + 512GB ROM.
The closest rival to this dual Sim phone is Samsung Z Flip 3 but the foldable P50 Pocket version has revolutionised this segment.
It’s a breeze to download popular apps like Facebook, WhatsApp, and Google Maps while in terms of customisation and more services the Petal One – an all-in-one subscription package – makes your life better.
The phone does the standard phone stuff and but unlike its predecessors it doesn’t depend on Google Play but with Petal Apps you have access to Google apps. And with Huawei AppGallery covering essential global and local apps makes this phone a true powerhouse in all aspects.
Based on my time with the phone, I believe Huawei has got it right – mostly.
In Huawei Consumer Business Group – Middle East and Africa president Pablo Ning’s words, with the release of the new P50 Pro and P50 Pocket the Chinese tech giant remains committed to best quality, aesthetics and photography experiences.
The smartphones were recently launched in key markets across Asia-Pacific, the Middle East and Africa, Europe and Latin America.
In Bahrain, the P50 pocket is available for BD559.9 in white and BD689.9 for the Premium gold edition with gifts worth BD152.3.
