Bahrain’s livestock has been declared free of the Ovine rinderpest (PPR) and the brucellosis.
An epidemiological survey conducted countrywide by taking blood samples from livestock herds did not show any symptoms of both diseases in Bahrain.
The Livestock Directorate at the Works, Municipalities Affairs and Urban Planning Ministry carried out the survey, as required by the World Organisation for Animal Health.
The results of the survey were announced during a virtual meeting held with the UN Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO).
It was attended by Under-Secretary for Animal Wealth Dr Khalid Ahmed Hassan, FAO sub-regional co-ordinator for the GCC and Yemen and the FAO representative in the UAE Dino Francescutti Motis, and other officials.
They discussed progress of work on the ‘support to control and eradicate tuberculosis in cattle and zoonotic tuberculosis in Bahrain’.
With regard to brucellosis in cattle, Dr Hassan said, “Initial results of the epidemiological survey showed that cattle in Bahrain are free of brucellosis, and all samples taken from cattle herds will be examined fully.”
He noted that 65 per cent of the survey goals have been achieved to date, adding that all cattle herds in Bahrain will be examined by late October.
He said that the elimination of bovine tuberculosis will enable small farmers to join the livestock value chain as well as market local dairy products, increase their income and living standards.
