Regional developments, including the repercussions of Iranian attacks on Bahrain and other GCC states, were discussed as Foreign Minister Dr Abdullatif bin Rashid Al Zayani met his Russian counterpart Sergey Lavrov during his visit to Russia.
The two sides reviewed the loss of life and damage to civilian facilities and infrastructure, as well as the potential impact of restrictions on navigation in the Strait of Hormuz on energy security, food supplies and global trade.
Both ministers stressed the importance of regional and international efforts to de-escalate tensions and expressed support for Pakistani mediation aimed at securing an agreement to end the conflict and reopen the Strait to international shipping.
Discussions also covered prospects for strengthening diplomatic co-ordination at the UN Security Council, in light of Bahrain’s non-permanent membership for 2026–2027 and Russia’s permanent seat. Particular focus was placed on challenges facing the Council, including developments related to Iran’s closure of the Strait and associated global economic implications.
Mr Lavrov highlighted longstanding ties between Bahrain and Russia, noting continued progress in economic, trade, investment, cultural and humanitarian co-operation.
He also commended Bahrain’s participation in the St Petersburg International Economic Forum with a high-level delegation led by the Minister of Finance and National Economy.
Dr Al Zayani reaffirmed the strength of bilateral relations and the shared commitment to advancing co-operation in support of mutual interests.
He underscored the need to reduce regional tensions, uphold state sovereignty, ensure freedom of navigation and resolve disputes through peaceful and diplomatic means.
The two sides further discussed ways to expand co-operation across economic, trade and development sectors to advance joint interests.
The meeting was attended by Bahrain ambassador to Russia Ahmed Al Saati, Bahrain’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations Jamal Fares Al Rowaie, and other senior officials.
